Children's safety on the slopes — Komperdell back protector

Children's safety on the slopes — why a back protector is not just a gadget

Falls are part of everyday life for children on the slopes. Most end with a laugh and a quick brush-down of the jacket, but some – especially a collision with another skier or a fall on an icy piste – can end with a back injury. That is why more and more parents see a vest with a back protector as just as essential as a helmet.

From the 2026/2027 season our rental has a new partner – the Komperdell brand – and the Safe Junior set: a complete junior ski or snowboard set together with a green vest with a back protector.

Why a back protector for children?

A child's spine is still growing and is more vulnerable to injury than an adult's. A back protector:

  • absorbs the impact of a fall on hard, icy snow,
  • protects the spine in a collision with other people on the slope,
  • supports posture – a child wearing the vest feels a "frame" and leans back less often,
  • gives parents peace of mind when their child rides the lift on their own.

A protector does not replace learning to ski safely or wearing a helmet – it complements both. The helmet protects the head, the protector protects the back: together they are the basic safety kit for young skiers.

How to choose the right vest size

The most important rule: the protector should reach from the neck to the tailbone and sit snugly against the back. In practice:

  1. Measure your child's back length – from the seventh cervical vertebra (the clearly felt "bump" at the base of the neck) to the waist.
  2. Choose the vest size by that length, not by height "to grow into".
  3. Put the vest on over a thin layer (a base layer or fleece) – our light Komperdell vest is worn under or over the jacket, so try both and choose the one that gives your child full freedom of movement.
  4. Tighten the straps so the vest doesn't slip when your child leans forward, but doesn't restrict the shoulders.

At the shop we help you choose the size on the spot – it literally takes two minutes, and we can explain everything in English.

That is +35 zł per day compared with a standard junior set (60 zł). Frequently asked questions

Is a back protector compulsory for children? It is not required by law, but we strongly recommend it – especially on busy slopes and while learning to ski.

From what age can a child wear the vest? We choose junior vests by back length, not by age – at our shop we fit them even for skiers of nursery-school age.

How much is the back-protector vest on its own? 50 zł per day (by the day only). In the Safe Junior set the protector costs 35 zł per day more than the standard set – 95 zł in total instead of 110 zł separately, so 15 zł cheaper.

Is the vest worn under or over the jacket? Our light Komperdell vest is worn under or over the jacket – both are correct, so choose whichever is more comfortable for your child.
